Miami has a reputation for being an expensive place, but there are many great activities you can do with your family, friends, or alone in Miami that are free or cost nearly nothing. Here are two favorites of Dr. Colin Knight’s.
RF Orchids Garden Tour: R.F. Orchids is an orchid nursery in Homestead that started in 1970 when Robert Fuchs, the president of the company, cleaned up his family’s property. It’s a gorgeous spot filled with all kinds of beautiful plants. You are greeted with a cold drink as you walk through the shop and greenhouses. You can pet their cats and say hi to the parrots. The place gets really special when you come on a Saturday or a Sunday at 11 am or 3 pm when you get a free garden tour of the owner’s private garden adjacent to the shop and greenhouses. Frequently, Robert himself will lead the tour telling you the stories behind the historic home and property. Be sure to check out the clearance table in the back. I’ve taken home orchids for less than $10 a piece from there.

South Florida Bluegrass Association Monthly Festival: I was surprised to find the bluegrass music I associate with my Appalachian upbringing right here in South Florida. For over 40 years the SFBA has offered a free monthly music festival. Bring a chair, bring a picnic, bring a frisbee and sit back, relax, and enjoy local music for free. The event is usually the first Sunday of the month from 1 pm to 5 pm, but check the website to be sure it hasn’t moved to a different day of the month. Held in a shady oak grove in Greynolds Park, near Aventura, you can sit quietly in front and listen. I’ve also gone with a group of people and kids and hung out farther back and had a picnic.
Cost: $7 park admission fee, music is FREE
When: First Sunday of the month from 1-5 pm
Location: 17530 W Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach FL 33160
