Dr. Colin Knight
Pediatric Surgeon
Experience
The recipient of both the Air Force Achievement Medal and the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award, Dr. Colin Knight holds a unique and unparalleled perspective on health in both emergency and non-urgent settings. Dr. Knight is devoted to children’s health, both professionally and in the community. Having served in the Air Force with multiple deployments overseas and domestically, and having been the general surgery member of the first Miami Children’s Hospital team on the ground in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, he is adept and adapting to new and hostile environments, establishing relationships with his patients and their families, and acting quickly to solve their problem with a holistic approach.
Dr. Knight received his BS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University in 1991 and continued his higher education to earn his MD from the University of Virginia in 1995. He had joined the United States Air Force just before graduating college, so Dr. Colin Knight went on active duty after his surgical internship serving as a Flight Surgeon until 2000. For his achievements, he was also honored with the Air Force Achievement Medal and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Upon leaving active duty, he returned to training in surgery followed by specialization in pediatric surgery. The American Board of Surgery awarded him his initial General Surgery Certification in 2006 and Pediatric Surgery Certification in 2008. In his time training, he received high praise for his dedication, his demonstrated expertise, and his insatiable curiosity in medical research. Only a year back into his training, he earned the award of Outstanding Junior Resident at Allegheny General Hospital. He has served on multiple hospital committees at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. In 2007, he began work as a Pediatric Surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Miami, Florida. Dr. Knight recently accepted the position of Pediatric Surgeon at Kendall Regional Medical Center, with the task of building the pediatric surgery practice.
Recognizing a need to improve the health of children before they need medical care, Dr. Colin Knight found a local organization that shares his passion for healthy children. FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth) teaches children nutrition by teaching them to cook, offers healthy after-school snacks, and provides physically active camps. Dr Knight founded and ran their major annual fundraiser, Chefs Up Front. The event raised almost $500,000 for the charity under his leadership. Inspired by his work with youths in the community, Dr. Knight made two significant changes in 2013. In a strong effort to do more hands-on community work, he became a Level 1 Crossfit Trainer and a few months later, secured a Clinical Assistant Professorship at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University.
Dr. Knight has been active with his children in scouting. In addition, he brought the nationally acclaimed All Pro Dad’s program to his son’s school and ran it for years. He regularly visits area schools to share his expertise with children as part of Career Day events.
Dr. Colin Knight’s expertise in the medical world extends across various fields. He has been published many times, frequently in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. He has been quoted as an expert by major news sources and has appeared on local and national television broadcasts. He has also given multiple lectures such as “The Rise and Fall of Fetal Surgery” at Allegheny General Hospital, “Computer-Assisted, Robot-Enhanced Microsurgery in an Animal Model” at the American College of Surgeons, and “Up All Night: Optimizing Performance in Residency” at the Miami Children’s Hospital.
Recognized for his accomplishments in awards, degrees, and certificates, Dr. Knight has an insatiable curiosity and devotion to his field, and to the prospect of a safer, healthier world for the children he works with daily.
